Written Steps

In order to sharpen an edge, an apex will need to be achieved. An apex is when the two sides of a blade meet at a point. This is the sharpest point of the edge and is essential for effective cutting. To achieve this, the blade must be ground at a specific angle, typically between 15 to 20 degrees for most edges.

The tool needing to be sharpened should be held securely, and the sharpening tool should be moved along the edge in a consistent manner. It is important to maintain the angle of the tool while sharpening. This can be done using a whetstone, honing rod, or a specialized sharpening tool. This should be done while alternating sides to ensure an even edge is achieved. Finish with a finer grit to polish the edge and remove any burrs that may have formed during the sharpening process.
